31 January 2023 (Suva, Fiji): Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva has developed a strong partnership with the Fiji Government’s Ministry of Forestry by purchasing custom, handcrafted Tanoas (Fijian bowls) to be used at the hotel to elevate the guest experience. These handmade wooden bowls are a testament to the Ministry of Forestry’s joint efforts with local Fijian villages in upskilling their residents to create sustainable income opportunities and preserve traditional Fijian culture.

“We are proud of this collaboration, as this is at the heart of what we stand for as a company. We believe in actively working to empower local artisans and keep their art alive. Supporting local is not a trend but a commitment for us. Through our Journey to Tomorrow 2030 goals, we will work together to improve the lives of 30 million people in our communities around the world,” commented Lachlan Walker, Area General Manager – of South Pacific, IHG Hotels & Resorts. “By displaying local, sustainable art around the hotel, we create authentic cultural experiences for guests at the iconic Grand Pacific Hotel.”

The Fijian Tanoas will be displayed across the Restaurants & Bars at the hotel. No trees are cut for production; instead, wood is sourced from salvaged mahogany trees and stumps and taken to a dedicated joinery workshop where village youths (including females) are trained to create exquisite pieces for sale.

Training provided by the Ministry of Forestry teaches participants to create value-added products from residual logs and wood, empowering landowners to create sustainable income opportunities for the future.
